What Actually Is Resin?

Resin bound is a surface made by mixing small natural stone with a strong, clear resin. The stones are completely coated in the resin before the mixture is laid onto a prepared base and hand-trowelled to create a smooth, seamless finish.

Unlike loose gravel, the stones are securely bound together, so they don’t move around underfoot or scatter across your driveway. The finished surface still has the natural look and texture of stone, but with a much neater, more practical finish.

What Is Resin Made Of?

Resin bound surfacing is made from two main ingredients: natural stone and a strong, clear resin.

The stone comes in different sizes, colours and blends, giving you plenty of choice over the finished look. The clear resin acts as a binder, holding the stones securely together while allowing their natural colour and texture to show through.

How Deep Is The Resin?

For a typical driveway, the resin bound surface is usually laid at around 15-18mm thick, depending on the type and size of stone being used.

The resin layer is only the finished surface. Underneath needs a strong, properly prepared base to support vehicles and help the driveway last.

How Is Resin Laid?

Resin bound surfacing is mixed on site, combining the natural stone with clear resin until every stone is evenly coated.

The mixture is then laid over the prepared base and carefully spread and hand-trowelled to create an even, seamless finish. Once cured, it forms a strong, durable surface with no loose stones.

What Goes Underneath Resin?

A resin driveway needs a strong, stable base underneath it. Depending on the existing surface and condition of the ground, this may involve excavation, a compacted stone sub-base and a suitable baser layer before the resin bound surface is laid.

Good preparation underneath is just as important as the resin you see on top. A properly prepared base helps prevent movement and gives the finished driveway strength and durability.

Can Resin Be Laid Over An Existing Driveway?

In some cases, yes. Resin bound surfacing can be laid over an existing concrete or tarmac surface, provided it is strong, stable and in suitable condition.

Every driveway is different, so the existing surface needs to be assessed first. If the base isn't suitable, additional preparation or groundwork may be needed before the resin is laid.

Does Water Drain Through Resin?

Yes. Resin bound surfacing as permeable, which means water can drain through the small gaps between the stones rather than simply sitting on the surface.

When installed over a suitable permeable base, this helps reduce surface water and puddling and allows rainwater to drain naturally into the ground.

Is Resin Slippery?

Resin bound surfaces are designed to provide good grip underfoot and are generally not slippery in normal conditions.

As with any outdoor surface, care should still be taken during frost, ice or very wet weather. The texture stone finish helps provide more grip than a completely smooth surface.

How Long Before You Can Walk or Drive on Resin?

Resin bound surfaces need time to fully cure after installation. They can usually be walked on after around 6-8 hours and driven on after approximately 24-48 hours, depending on the product used and weather conditions.
